Evan Binge

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

I recently shot photos for the “Skateboarding for Hope” tour here in South Africa in which Evan Binge took 3rd place.  On the trip home my friend Mike and I discussed the results and how close it was and I said I preferred some of the other guys styles to Evan’s…  After seeing Evan skate this bowl here in South Africa, my opinion of him has completely changed.  He goes in hard and with all his heart and you can see it in his style.  Sorry Mike, you were right!

Felix Arguelles & Manny Santiago

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

I shot this photo at the very first Maloof Money Cup in South Africa.  It was quite a wild experience and I have to say one of the best photographic jobs I have ever had.  Being a life long skateboarder and not only seeing but also getting to photograph some of the top professionals from around the world, how could it not be.  Felix Arguelles(left) was a top pro from back in my days of skating and here he is with Manny Santiago(right), one of the top pros from today.  Manny has become a high-light for the spectators here in South Africa for what is now known as the Kimberley Diamond Cup, he’s always having a good time, even if he’s competing in the final.

Skatepark in the Ghetto

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

These are some shots that I took over the weekend at the skatepark in Alexander Township in Johannesburg.  I always knew it existed but never knew where it was and I have to say, I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was.  It’s a huge park with loads to skate and ride on and the kids there are cool which, for me, is key.  I really don’t care to hang out with a bunch of people that think they’re cooler than everyone else because they skate or ride better.  Who cares, we’re all there to have fun anyways.  It was fun watching these guys rip on their bikes and even more fun shooting some photos.  Thanks to the people that built the skatepark and gave those kids a place to go to and do something positive, it beats most of the parks I’ve seen in upper to middle class neighborhoods.

Mountain Dew, “Do the Dew” tour’s last stop.

Monday, March 17th, 2014

Here are some photos I shot for the Moutain Dew event at the University of Johannesburg on Friday the 15th of March.  Always a good time shooting photos for them.  Everyone skated and rode hard and no one got hurt…  It was a good day.

Brothers

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

I just found this photo in my archives today of the 2 brothers from Malawi that did most of the renovation work on our home.  We’re forever thankful for the great work they did.  On the left is “Evans” and on the right is “Size”.

Chameleons of Kruger

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

These little guys are amazing creatures and it’s actually quite sad how many of them fall vicitm to cars in the Kruger National Park.  You’ll be amazed at that you see if you keep your eyes on the road.  I spotted this little Chameleon crossing the road and waited for him to get to safety before I moved along.  A lot of people were so stoked when they stopped to see what it was we were looking at and saw this little dude.

Switch Ollie by Maanda Mulaudzi

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

This is one of the photos that never got used for a recent article that I shot with Maanda.  It was a random night and we decided to go to this spot and shoot the photo that we’d been discussing for so long.  It didn’t take long for Maanda to land this one thankfully…  Probably one of the dingiest roads in Edenvale.

TK Modise

Wednesday, February 12th, 2014

TK is a young ripper from the south of Johannesburg.  This photo does not serve him justice though, the gap which he is clearing is way bigger than it looks here.  Gap to sketchy bank and a gravel covered roll away and it only took him a couple tries.  His style definitely speaks for itself.

Malachite Kingfisher with it’s Prize

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

If you sit quietly at Lake Panic Bird Hide in the Kruger National Park, you’re bound to see some cool stuff.  Having been there so many times, I’ve gotten to know the perches where these little guys like to fish from.  I managed to capture this little bird as it returned to one of the many perches it was fishing from.
