Kimberley Street Kid.

Monday, March 25th, 2013

The downtown area of Kimberley is quite small, no tall sky scrapers or anything like that.  It does have something in common with most large downtown areas such as that of Johannesburg and Cape Town, Street Kids.  They walk the streets at night looking for a fix, whatever drugs they can find to help them through their lives.  No parents and no home to go to, they sleep pretty much where ever they can.  We came acoss this kid that asked the security guard at the Post Office is he could sleep right there on the stairs.  She said she felt sorry for him so she gave him a piece of bread which you can see in the photos.  I have no idea how old this kid is but he had Tattoos on his leg and another guard told us that this kid had been into some of the heaviest drugs the night before…  Apparently he ran away from home and then ran away from the ‘safe haven’ as well, left to lurk the streets of Kimberley, steeling stuff to sell for drugs.  Quite a sad story.

Winter Tragedy

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Shacks are a very common site in Johannesburg but unfortunately, stories of them burning to the ground are also very common, especially in winter.  On a recent trip back from the downtown area of Johannesburg, my friend and I spotted some dark smoke rising in the not too far distance.  We decided to get a closer look and see if there were any photo oppertunities to be had.  These are some of the photos I shot and which have been used on our facebook page to help get donations out to the families which have lost their homes and all their belongings.

Hi-Jacked Building.

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I recently went to visit a Hi-Jacked building in the downtown area of Johannesburg.  Basically, people would just take over the building and there was nothing the landlord could do about it.  There is some weird protection act here in South Africa that protects homeless people.  This building has been re-claimed and it’s gonna be made into something way more appealing!  My friend Clayton took me through the building so I could shoot some photos, here they are!

Sleeping on the Street

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

I found this guy sleeping on the streets of Johannesburg on a recent trip to downtown.  I felt sad for the people down there, drinking their sorrows away…  I think he was dreaming that South Africa would become the 53rd State of America!

Homeless But Happy

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

My friend Simon is visitng me from London and he is also a photographer, infact, I should say, more of a photographer than I am, but that’s not really the point.  So, he has been spending many days actually living down on the Cape Flats where most South Africans wouldn’t even dare walk!  He has told me some crazy stories about the people down there and I can’t even imagine what it must be like to experience that.  Anyways, he came back to JHB for a couple days and we went and shot some pictures in downtoan JHB with our friend JJ who kinda knows the scene down there and he guided us around to get some shots.  These are mine.

Madagascar and Nosy Be island.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

I recently went on Honeymoon with my wife Sarah to Madagascar, needless to say, it was totally amazing and very different to anything I have ever experienced!  I was totally humbled by the native people, living off approximately $1 per day and still, they are hardly ever without a smile, just doing what they have to do.  Oh, these are also the first pictures I have blogged so I hope this works!
