Oxpecker

Friday, August 6th, 2010

These strange little birds feed exclusively on the bodies of mammals.  They dig through the fur with their beaks and pick out ticks and other insects found on the ‘host’ animal.  They will also feed on insects that are found in or on wounds that the mammal may have.  The smallest mammal that the Oxpeckers will feed off of is the Impala, anything smaller is usually avoided.  This is probably because of the heavy tick load and also the more social nature of the species.  Smaller buck like the Duiker and Steenbok are more solitary animals.  It has also been discovered that Oxpeckers will open old wounds and enhance existing ones to drink the blood from an animal upon which they are perched.  I have visited Kruger Park many times in my life and have always wanted to snap a clear shot of these birds in action.  It’s proved a difficult task and finally on my most recent trip, I got what I was waiting for!

Wallride.

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

I’ve been shooting an article for Session magazine for the last couple of months, it’s a feature on Bergen Nielson.  While out and about on a Sunday afternoon, searching for spots we came across this bank to wall thingy.  I didn’t get a shot of Bergen on it but instead, Sam Khumalo…  Rather large wall ride to fakie!

Resident Toad

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

It’s summer time here in Johannesburg and that usually means, lots of rain, lots of insects and, of course, lots of critters that like to eat the insects!  Toads are quite common around these parts but, it’s not as common to see them in your yard every other night, hopping around.  I’ve spotted this guy on a couple of occasions now, just cruising the yard so, I decided it was time to shoot some photos of him/her.  Enjoy!

Leaves in the Fall

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I shot these pictures in Grass Valley California in October, just as the seasons are changing and the trees are loosing their leaves.  I really love the colors in the Fall, it’s dreamy!

Lightning through a Windshield

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I recently drove up to the northern Limpopo Province with my friend Simon to shoot some pictures with him.  We were supposed to spend the night up there and drive home the next day, instead, we drove back down the same day!  We hit this storm on the way back down, it was definitely one of the most insane storms I have ever seen!  These are some of the shots I took with my Canon G11, set up on my dashboard with 15 second shutter speeds.  I really love how these came out!

San Francisco Sun Down

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I can’t remember which street in San Francisco I was on when I shot this picture.  It might have been Bush Street, but who knows and who cares really!?  I liked the sunset and the ‘Yellow’ cab in the foreground.

Farm Scene

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I shot this picture a while ago with my Contax G1 and just liked the old look of this picture, there’s definitely something about shooting with film that you just don’t get when shooting digital.

Johannesburg Street Scene.

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I shot this picture with my Contax G1 film camera, I really wasn’t expecting much from the image but it turned out to be one of my favourite pictures of the day!  Shot from the top of a random building in downtown Johannesburg.

Obama in San Francisco

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Barack Obama was recently in San Francisco for one of his dinner ‘fund raiser’ things.  There were a lot of angry people out front of the hotel, holding up some offensive banners and getting in arguments with other people that had different views to theirs.  We stood around the other side of the hotel where the more ‘mellow’ people were standing, in hope of a glimpse of the president.  I didn’t get to see him, well, not until later on that is.  It just so happened that he was leaving the hotel as I was walking back down this way later that evening and I got a glimpse of him driving by in his limo, followed by many cops on bikes and in cars, it was really something to see.  This picture is of one of the banners that were being held up out front of the hotel.  I got the feeling they didn’t like Barack Obama too much.  I shot this with my Contax G1 film camera.

San Francisco Hydrant.

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I haven’t used this blog thing in a long while.  I went on a trip to San Francisco and just haven’t had time to add any pictures.  I shot this picture while walking down Bush St with my friend James.  I liked it.
